How To Start A Conversation About Hearing Loss

Originally published September 19, 2018. Refreshed June 2026.

Hearing loss affects an estimated 48 million Americans, yet many people wait years before seeking help. It is frustrating on all accounts. It can feel exhausting to constantly repeat yourself, and it is equally hard to be the one always asking for the repeat. As a friend or family member of someone experiencing hearing loss, you may find yourself wanting to say, "You need hearing aids!" But because this is such a personal topic, taking a patient and thoughtful approach will go much further than a direct push.

Here are a few ways to start that conversation.

  1. Approach the person in a private setting. A group setting will most likely lead to embarrassment, which could have adverse effects on the conversation.

  2. Start by asking if they have noticedsigns of hearing loss. Feel free to review ourquestionnaire with them. They may be relieved to have someone to talk to. If they deny there is an issue, gently share specific examples of situations you have noticed that caused concern.

  3. Explain that untreated hearing loss is connected to social isolation, depression, balance disorders, and an increased risk of cognitive decline. Research published in recent years has continued to strengthen the link between unaddressed hearing loss and dementia. Also, explain thathearing loss is often irreversible, and the longer it goes untreated, the greater the cumulative impact.

  4. Do your research beforehand and present one or two options for audiologists in their area. Reassure them that the first step is simply a hearing evaluation with no obligation and no pressure.

  5. Help them understand what to expect during thefirst visit with the audiologist. Today's hearing evaluations are thorough, comfortable, and often completed in under an hour.

  6. End on a positive and encouraging note! Talk about what improved hearing could mean for them: following conversations with grandchildren, enjoying music again, feeling confident in social settings, and staying more connected to the people they love.

Starting this conversation is one of the most caring things you can do for someone you love.
