The Link Between Hearing Health and Cholesterol Levels
As we have mentioned in previous blog posts, the body is a complex, interconnected system. Because of this, for the entire body to be healthy and working correctly, each part must be performing optimally. So, it is no surprise that studies have found a link between hearing health and cholesterol levels.
WHAT IS CHOLESTEROL?
Cholesterol is a type of fat (lipid) that is in your cells and blood. It is produced naturally by your liver and can also come from the digestion of animal products and certain foods. Cholesterol is essential to specific body processes, including hormone production, digestion, and cell creation. However, when cholesterol levels are too high, the body’s risk of health problems like heart disease increases.
HOW DOES HIGH CHOLESTEROL IMPACT YOUR HEALTH?
When there is more cholesterol in your blood, it can build up with other substances and cause blood clots. These blockages can lead to heart attacks, strokes, and other health problems that occur when blood flow is cut off from parts of the body.
HOW DOES HIGH CHOLESTEROL IMPACT YOUR HEARING?
When high cholesterol impacts blood flow, it may cause areas like the inner ear not to receive the oxygen and nutrients needed to function correctly. When the inner ears don’t get enough blood flow and proper oxygen levels, the hair cells can suffer permanent damage.
HOW DO YOU PREVENT/CONTROL HIGH CHOLESTEROL?
Healthy Lifestyle: Having a healthy diet and regular exercise can both help prevent and control high cholesterol.
Avoid Smoking: Smoking can lead to the production of more “bad” cholesterol in your body.
Regular Check-Ups: It is important to have yearly/regular check-ups to monitor your cholesterol levels.
Medication: For some patients, doctors may prescribe certain medications to help with cholesterol levels.
Listening to Your Body: If you are experiencing problems like hearing loss or any other new symptoms, it is essential to have them checked out to determine what is causing them, as there may be other underlying conditions.
If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with high cholesterol, it is vital to have your/their hearing checked by an audiologist.
