COVID-19 and Hearing Loss
A new study from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Massachusetts Eye and Ear published in Communications Medicine provides evidence that COVID-19 can infect cells of the inner ear, including hair cells, which are critical for both hearing and balance. The researchers also found that the pattern of infection seen in human inner ear tissue is consistent with the symptoms seen in a study of 10 Covid-19 patients who reported various ear-related symptoms. The team looked at patients who tested positive for COVID-19 and developed symptoms that included hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ear), or dizziness within three weeks of diagnosis. Nine of these patients suffered from tinnitus, six experienced vertigo, and all suffered mild to profound hearing loss.
The researchers now hope to use their human cellular models to test possible treatments for the inner ear infections caused by COVID-19 and other viruses.
We recommend that anyone diagnosed with COVID-19 throughout the pandemic be tested and monitored for hearing loss. Schedule an appointment with us.
