7 Tips to Keep Your Ears in Tip-Top Shape
Your hearing is precious, and it's worth celebrating and protecting. This month and every day, we're dedicated to raising awareness about hearing health and sharing valuable tips to keep your ears in tip-top shape!
TIP 1: PROTECT YOUR EARS FROM LOUD NOISES
Exposure to loud noises is one of the leading causes of hearing loss. Whether at a concert, using power tools, or simply listening to music through headphones, it's important to protect your ears from excessive noise. Use earplugs or noise-canceling headphones in noisy environments, and keep the volume at a safe level when using personal audio devices.
TIP 2: STOP USING COTTON SWABS
When cleaning your ears, you instinctively grab a cotton swab, which can cause earwax blockages. Sticking a cotton swab in your ear often pushes wax deeper into the ear, which can cause severe damage to the lining of your ear canal or eardrum.
TIP 3: 60/60 RULE
According to the Mayo Clinic, a good rule of thumb is to follow the 60/60 rule. We recommend that your headphone volume be no higher than 60 percent of the maximum level for only 60 minutes. Give your ears a break from the sound!
TIP 4: MAINTAIN A HEALTHY DIET
A well-balanced diet can support not only your overall health but also your hearing health. Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A, C, and E, and minerals like zinc and magnesium are essential for maintaining good ear health. Incorporate plenty of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and fish into your diet to help protect your hearing.
TIP 5: AVOID SMOKING
Smoking has been linked to an increased risk of hearing loss. The chemicals in cigarettes can reduce blood flow to the inner ear, damaging the delicate hair cells responsible for transmitting sound to the brain. If you smoke, consider quitting, and if you don't smoke, avoid exposure to secondhand smoke whenever possible.
TIP 6: STAY ACTIVE AND EXERCISE REGULARLY
Cardio exercises like walking, running, or cycling get the blood pumping to all parts of your body, including the ears. Blood circulation helps the ears’ internal components stay healthy and work to their maximum potential. Keep moving!
TIP 7: MONITOR YOUR HEARING REGULARLY
Hearing loss can occur gradually, making it difficult to notice until it's advanced. Regular hearing check-ups with an audiologist are key to catching any issues early. By monitoring your hearing health regularly, you can take action to address any changes before they become significant problems.
