10 Things People with Hearing Loss Wish Others Knew

Living with hearing loss presents unique challenges often misunderstood by those who haven't experienced it firsthand. Despite the prevalence of hearing loss, many misconceptions persist, and well-intentioned actions can sometimes be unhelpful or even frustrating. At Hearing Health Associates, we believe that fostering understanding and empathy is crucial in supporting those with hearing impairments.

  1. Refrain from speaking over others: So I can focus on you; please speak one at a time.

  2. Give me quiet: Turn off the TV, music, and fan, and request a quieter booth in a restaurant.

  3. Hearing loss is tiring: It takes all my energy to fill in the blanks of missing sounds.

  4. I am not rude or unintelligent: I am trying; please repeat yourself and let me speak.

  5. Be kind to me: I would prefer to opt-out and be alone than be with you when you are frustrated.

  6. Speak clearly & slowly: Give my brain time to process your speech.

  7. Repeat & rephrase: I will miss some words; please repeat, rephrase, or spell it out.

  8. Face me when you speak: Lip reading helps me connect the dots when I can't hear you.

  9. Hearing aids are unlike eyeglasses: Sounds are louder but not 100% clear in noisy environments.

  10. Give me context: If all I hear is "ca_," knowing if it's about animals (cat) or headgear (cap) helps.

Supporting a loved one as they adjust to hearing aids is a collaborative journey that strengthens relationships and enhances overall communication. If a loved one is experiencing hearing difficulties, contact us for a consultation, and let us guide you both through a hearing healthcare journey!
